Meet Comrade Pulane Mohajane, who has been a SADTU SACCO member from April 2019. Comrade Mohajane joined the SADTU SACCO because she believed in the importance of saving money such as avoiding unwanted debt, saving for large purchases and also taking care of the unexpected family expenses. Comrade Pulane believes in growing and supporting the union in their quest to establish a Co-operative Bank. The accounts she uses to save her money is the primary account which is the Regular savings as well as the long term account which is the Christmas savings. She saves R500 on each account monthly and has recently made a withdrawal from her Christmas account to pay for her child’s outstanding school fees. This has given her a peace of mind and not having to worry about the January long month. She is still continuing to save on these accounts as a form of security should any unexpected expenses arise. She believes that members of the union should support this co-operate financial institution not only for SADTU but for their own financial stability.

Comrade Nthabiseng Phalole joined SADTU SACCO in November 2019. Cde Phalole is a parent to 3 kids that she is taking care of financially. Her kids has been one of the many financial reasons she joined the SADTU SACCO, she has been looking for something that will take care of her kid’s school finances, household expenses as well as the family’s unexpected necessities. Another reason why Cde Phalole has been advocating for SADTU SACCO, is their interest rates on savings. Since 2019 she has been saving on both the Regular savings earning an interest rate of 3,95% and Christmas savings at an interest rate of 4,95%. Cde is saving R200 on the regular savings account and R200 on the Christmas savings account. The reason she needed both accounts was the fact that the regular savings is flexible and can be used in case of an emergency and the Christmas savings can be left alone to accumulate a larger amount of savings by the end of the year. Cde has so far withdrawn R1200 from regular savings for those unexpected expenses and R2400 from Christmas savings to cover the outstanding school and registration fees for the kids. One advice she would like to share with potential members is that had it not been for SADTU SACCO she would have been struggling in debts from bank loans and joining SADTU SACCO has afforded her an opportunity to borrow from her own savings according to her own terms.

In November 2019, Cde Mthembu decided to join SADTU SACCO to have financial security. It was important for her to save in order to cover her costs for December as well as her back to school expenses. She currently saves R500 every month her regular savings and has so far withdrawn R3000 in cash. Saving with SADTU SACCO has been a positive experience for Cde Mthembu as the withdrawal was a very quick process which took less than 48hr for her to receive her money. The money she withdrew has helped her take care her car problems. This made her avoid going to loan sharks or commercial banks which exorbitant interest rates. Cde Mthembu shares with us why members should trust in SADTU SACCO and not think for second that it’s a scam. Money has been saved and withdrawals have been made and received.

Comrade Kekana joined SADTU SACCO in its inception in 2016. Cde Kekana shares his profound thoughts on the importance of saving and why he felt it was important for him to save with SADTU SACCO. Cde Kekana states that he has realized that as a nation there has been a huge drop in the state of people’s livelihood, the cost of living has increasingly become too high. The economy hasn’t been on the rise especially with the impact of Covid. Things have become expensive, people are spending more than saving. These are some of the reasons why Cde felt he needed to start saving and also instill the culture of saving amongst his peers. It was very important for him to change his mind set and get into the habit of saving. Cde Kekana currently has the Regular savings account and the Christmas savings account. He contributes R1000 every month which is split into the two accounts. Cde Kekana has made a withdrawal of R5000 from his Christmas savings account, this money was taken out for a family holiday. Some advice that Cde would like to share with members that has not joined SADTU SACCO yet would be they take the following into consideration:

* SADTU SACCO has offered a highly competitive interest rates on savings in comparison to commercial banks.
* As members of the union, it’s important to build the organization’s initiatives as they are for the economic well-being of the members.
* Having a culture of saving more than spending less can save one from unnecessary debts
* SADTU SACCO is owned by its members which leaves no room for errors.

Comrade Kekana is very pleased with his savings with SADTU SACCO and would encourage more members to join. The administration is very quick and effective.
